Bamboo Jewellery Training Boosts Rural Livelihoods in Mawsynram

Shillong, May 1, 2026: The Commerce and Industries Department, Government of Meghalaya, has successfully conducted a 15-day Executive Course on Bamboo Jewellery Making at Thyllaw village under Mawsynram C&RD Block in East Khasi Hills district.

The programme, implemented under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) initiative, was organised in collaboration with knowledge partner The Neera Sarmah Foundation.

Thyllaw village, known for its rich bamboo resources, has traditionally been home to artisans engaged in bamboo-based crafts such as broomsticks and basketry. Through this initiative, artisans were introduced to innovative bamboo jewellery making, adding a high-value dimension to their traditional skills.

Participants underwent hands-on training in jewellery design, bamboo processing, finishing techniques, and market-oriented product development. The initiative aims to diversify the artisans’ craft portfolio and enhance income opportunities by enabling access to wider markets.

Officials noted that such capacity-building programmes are crucial in transforming traditional crafts into sustainable and profitable ventures, thereby promoting local entrepreneurship and improving rural livelihoods.

The training programme is part of the broader RAMP initiative, supported by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, and co-sponsored by the World Bank. The scheme focuses on strengthening the MSME ecosystem through targeted interventions, skill development, and promotion of resource-based enterprises.
