Shillong, June 25: A delegation of the Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur met the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Thombor Shiwat, seeking the enactment of a law to preserve the matrilineal system of clan lineage among the indigenous Khasi and Jaintia communities.
The delegation, led by President R.L. Kharpran, included General Secretary Raphael Warjri, Spokesperson R.L. Blah, Executive Members Manstudy Nongrem and J.L. Khongshei. During the meeting, the members expressed concern over the need to enact legislation for the protection of the matrilineal system of clan lineage as envisaged under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
The delegation urged the JHADC to facilitate legislation that would safeguard and strengthen the traditional matrilineal system, describing it as the foundation of the social and cultural identity of the Khasi and Jaintia people.
They also stressed the need for a legal and constitutional mechanism to formally recognize the Dorbar Kur (clan organisation) and empower the Rangbah Kur (clan elders) to carry out their customary responsibilities in preserving indigenous traditions, customs and clan lineage practices.
According to the delegation, such legislation would reinforce the customary institutions of the indigenous communities while ensuring that the unique matrilineal heritage of the Khasi and Jaintia people is protected and passed on to future generations.
The Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur expressed hope that the JHADC would take the necessary steps to frame and enact the proposed legislation to preserve the traditional matrilineal system.
