Two killed, eight injured in lightning strike during football match in West Khasi Hills

Nongstoin, August 11: Two young men were killed and eight others injured after lightning struck while they were playing football at a ground in Mawsngapwir village in West Khasi Hills district on Monday afternoon.

According to West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Herbert P. Kharkongor, the incident occurred at around 3:00 pm when the two victims were playing football along with other players. A sudden lightning strike during rainfall struck the ground, resulting in the deaths of the two youths.

The deceased have been identified as Mickson Kshiar, 18, and Cleverson Kshiar, 19. Eight other persons sustained injuries in the incident.

According to information gathered from local village leaders, the two deceased were reportedly brothers who had come to study at Lawrapha village in West Khasi Hills. They were participating in the Independence Cup football tournament, organised by the Mawsngapwir Sports Club at Makreiñ Ground.

The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Nongstoin and St. Joseph Hospital, Tiehsaw, Nongstoin, for medical treatment.
