Shillong, June 26: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday announced the formation of a full-fledged Mandal Committee in the 15-Mawlai Assembly constituency, saying the move is aimed at expanding the party’s grassroots presence and ensuring that eligible residents receive the benefits of Central government welfare schemes.
Speaking on the occasion, BJP spokesperson M. Kharkrang said the establishment of the Mawlai Mandal marked an important step for the party in the constituency. He said many of those who joined the BJP had previously been associated with other political parties but decided to switch after becoming dissatisfied with the lack of progress and development. “After years of unresolved issues and extensive consultation, they felt enough is enough. Other constituencies have received benefits, so why should Mawlai be deprived?” Kharkrang said.
He announced that Synsharlang Maiong has been appointed president of the 36-member Mandal committee and said the new team would reach out to residents in every part of Mawlai to create awareness about various Central government development schemes, particularly those benefiting poor and low-income families. Kharkrang said the party’s priority was development rather than electoral politics. “Leave aside roads—those will come. There are many other schemes that benefit every household. Elections aside, we want the people of Mawlai to develop and catch up with other constituencies,” he said. He added that more than 30 people joined the BJP during the programme and that the next organisational step would be the formation of booth-level committees across the constituency.
Newly appointed Mawlai Mandal President Synsharlang Maiong said his decision to join the BJP followed years of working with different political parties without seeing meaningful results for the people. “We have worked with different parties over the years, but saw no positive outcome,” Maiong said.
He claimed that although several Central government schemes are available for Mawlai, many deserving beneficiaries fail to receive them because there is no effective mechanism to help them access these benefits. “We cannot say everyone in Mawlai is doing well. Many people still require assistance and support,” he said.
Maiong said the decision to join the BJP was taken collectively after detailed discussions with colleagues. “We did not act in haste. After thorough deliberation with friends, we unanimously decided that the BJP can help the poor in Mawlai. That is why we joined and formed the Mandal,” he added.
The BJP also released the list of office-bearers for the Mawlai Mandal for the 2026–2028 term. The committee comprises 31 office-bearers, including three Vice-Presidents, two General Secretaries, three Secretaries, a Treasurer and 20 Executive Members, with plans to further strengthen the organisation through the formation of booth committees.
