Shillong, June 24: Election Commissioner of India, Dr. Vivek Joshi, reviewed the preparedness for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls during his visit to Meghalaya, focusing on strengthening electoral processes and voter services across the state.
On June 23, the Election Commissioner held interactions with the District Election Officer (DEO), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and other election officials of Ri Bhoi District. Discussions centred on the implementation strategy for the Special Intensive Revision, including training and capacity-building programmes for Booth Level Officers (BLOs), EROs and AEROs. The following day, Dr. Joshi chaired a review meeting with election officials in East Khasi Hills District to assess the progress and preparedness of the ongoing revision exercise.
During his visit, the Election Commissioner inspected polling stations at Sacred Heart Boys’ Primary School under the 15-Mawlai (ST) Assembly Constituency and Pine Mount Polling Station under the 16-East Shillong (ST) Assembly Constituency. He reviewed the facilities and infrastructure available at the polling stations and interacted with officials regarding voter services, electoral roll-related activities and arrangements for the effective implementation of the SIR programme. A tree plantation programme was also conducted at the polling station premises as part of the visit.
Dr. Joshi also interacted with young future voters and encouraged them to actively participate in the democratic process upon attaining eligibility for voter registration. He emphasized the importance of electoral participation and civic responsibility in strengthening democracy.
The visit underscores the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring accurate electoral rolls and enhancing voter awareness ahead of future electoral exercises in the state.
